Dental prosthetics

Dental prosthetics is one of the most important areas of modern dentistry, focusing on restoring the natural appearance and functionality of the dentition. Solutions exist even in the case of a single missing tooth or the loss of the complete dentition, ensuring the patients receive the best aesthetic and health outcomes.

Dental Prosthetics not only restores the beauty of the smile but also plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy chewing ability and the structure of the jaw. Without replacing lost teeth, the remaining teeth may shift, leading to further problems.

Tooth loss

Aesthetics

Whether it's one missing tooth or several, a tooth gap is often initially seen as just an aesthetic issue. In reality, however, it is much more than that: tooth loss is the beginning of a process that can lead to serious health damage.

Health issues

Tooth loss (in the long term) can lead to both physical and mental health issues. The adjacent teeth may shift, our bite changes, and without treatment, the bone begins to resorb. Additionally, we smile less and may feel reluctant to socialize.

Further tooth loss

Due to the changed circumstances, our remaining teeth may also be at risk. In every case of tooth loss, it can be said that over time, the restoration becomes more complicated and costly.

Tooth loss is not just an aesthetic issue; it can also lead to serious health consequences. The gap created by a lost tooth alters the balance of the bite, which can overload the jaw joints. Over time, this can result in jawbone atrophy, shifting of the remaining teeth, and a deterioration of the facial aesthetic appearance. Furthermore, the loss of teeth reduces chewing ability, which affects digestion and overall health. Dental prosthesis, therefore, not only helps restore the smile but also contributes to maintaining overall oral health.

Types of tooth restoration

Tooth restoration is available in various forms, depending on how many teeth are missing and the condition of the remaining teeth and jawbone. First of all we would like to provide a brief introduction to the most important and common terms and procedures of tooth restorations, for a more comprehensive understanding of the available options.

Filling

In the case of small chips or cavities, dental filling materials may be sufficient to restore the tooth. This is also an ideal solution for restoring the edges of front teeth. A very nice aesthetic result can be achieved with this solution as well.

Inlay/onlay

When fillings are no longer sufficient! Inlays and onlays are used for larger cavities or fractures. It is important to note that an inlay/onlay can only be made if the tooth's root and sides remain intact. The difference between the two is the following: with an inlay, the inner part of the tooth is restored, while an onlay replaces the chewing surface. Inlays/onlays are a perfect solution for restoring the natural aesthetics of a damaged tooth.

Fogpótlás koronával
Crown

A tooth consists of two main parts: the root part (invisible) and the crown (the visible part). The application of an artificial crown is justified when the tooth is damaged to the extent that only the root can be saved. The artificial crown replaces the part above the gum line. Crowns are typically made of zirconia or metal. Thanks to modern material usage, artificial crowns match the neighboring teeth perfectly in color and shape.

Bridge

In cases where the tooth's root cannot be saved, the tooth can be replaced by creating a bridge that that uses the two adjacent teeth as pillars. The bridge fully adapts to the form and color of the existing dentition, creating a natural appearance. It is also possible to bridge multiple adjacent tooth gaps.

Fogpótlás implantátum használatával

Dental implants can be seen as a modern alternative to bridges. While we could not save the root of the damaged tooth, implantation allows for the adjacent teeth to remain intact. The artificial crown is installed on a dental implant, which serves as an artificial tooth root.

In everyday language, all of the above solutions can be considered a form of dental restoration. However, when we talk about the replacement of missing teeth rather than the restoration of damaged ones, we may use the term dental prosthesis. Dental bridges and implants, for example, can be considered dental prostheses. Dental Prostheses can be devided into the following subcategories:

Partial dental prosthesis

In the case of a partial dental prosthesis, one or more missing teeth are replaced. An excellent and modern solution could be the placement of one or even several dental implants. Another option is the use of a dental bridge, as previously mentioned, supported by the adjacent teeth. A partial dental restoration can be either removable or fixed.

Full dental prosthesis

Complete dental prostheses, also known as full dentures, replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. These solutions are designed to restore the function and appearance of natural teeth. A full denture is needed when all the teeth must be removed. In this case, we also distinguish between two options: fixed prosthesis and removable prosthesis.

Removable prosthesis

It is also known as a denture. It can be removed without medical intervention, allowing for convenient and thorough cleaning at home. This is a long-established, traditional dental prosthetic solution for cases where no natural teeth remain. Its cost is more affordable compared to fixed restorations. However, there are now more modern solutions available. With certain compromises, this can still be an ideal option for treating tooth loss.

Fixed prosthesis

Fixed dentures, also known as implant-supported prostheses, offer a modern and durable solution for replacing complete tooth loss. These prostheses are secured to the jaw using dental implants, providing exceptional stability and comfort. Fixed prostheses do not move during speech or eating, offering a more natural feel and greater confidence to the wearer. Additionally, they help preserve the jawbone, as the implants stimulate the bone, preventing its deterioration.

Dental implants

From explained above, one of the most modern dental prosthetic solutions is the dental implant. Nowadays, this is considered a routine procedure. We can also observe that whether it's about replacing a single tooth or an entire set of teeth, dental implants can be an conveniant solution. It’s important to note that in order to get a complete picture of our options, a proper assessment is essential. This consists of a personal examination and diagnosis. Afterward, we can create a detailed plan for the available options and costs.

How to choose the right kind of dental prosthesis?

Choosing the right dental prosthesis depends on individual needs and medical considerations. It's not a problem if the patient has specific ideas, but the tempting offers and "packages" you may find on the internet may not be the best solution for everyone. They are merely one option out of the many, and what is suitabe to the needs of one may not necessarily provide the best outcome for another.

Online Consultation

Online consultations for dental prosthetics or implant procedures are becoming increasingly common.Generally speaking, it can be said that in the online space, it's possible to discuss options, outline possibilities, and calculate costs, provided certain conditions are met. If a CT scan or panoramic X-ray is available, more specific details can be discussed during the online consultation. It’s important to note that a personal assessment is essential before the final treatment plan and the actual procedure. The online consultation does not replace the in-person consultation; it only provides a guideline for the available options.

When is an online consultation recommended?

If you just want to gather information and get a general idea of your options and their cost, an online consultation is a great opportunity. This option is ideal for patients living abroad, as it allows them to evaluate whether to proceed with the treatment before traveling here.

Process of Online Consultation, step by step

In certain cases, I do highly recommend online consultation as a first step. I believe that it can be helpful for those who have a high level of distrust or fear towards dentistry in making the initial decision. Even before the in-person meeting, I aim to establish a healthy doctor-patient trust.

This way patients can gather information and ask questions from the comfort of their own home, and then, based on the information they receive, decide whether to embark on the journey that will ultimately lead to a guaranteed smile.

Cost of Dental Prosthetics

The cost of dental prosthetics largely depends on the chosen solution and the complexity of the procedure. For example, implants may be more expensive, but they represent a long-term investment since they are more durable and stable than traditional prosthetics. The price of partial and full dentures can also vary depending on the materials used and the technology applied during the fabrication process. For a detailed quote, it is worth visiting our clinic for a consultation, during which either I or one of my team’s doctors will prepare a personalized offer.

Process of Dental Prosthetics

The process of dental prosthetics consists of several steps, starting with the assessment of the condition and ending with the final placement of the prosthetic.

It is important to note that in more complex cases, the treatment plan is not made right next to the chair. In many cases, it is necessary to carefully consider the options and consult with another colleague (such as an oral surgeon or orthodontist) to create the perfect treatment plan. This may take a few days after the assessment.

Once the treatment plan is accepted, the treatments can begin.

The entire process can take several months, depending on how much preparation and recovery time is required during the treatment.

Unfortunately, dental treatment is still not a wellness treatment. However, it does not have to be painful. With the right attitude, communication, and atmosphere, the journey to a beautiful smile can be made much more pleasant!
